Best Canadian Immigration Moments of 2018

2018 was a huge year for Canadian immigration. The country has promised to welcome more skilled workers than ever before, with an increase every year! Canadian industries are booming, and more workers are needed to fill available jobs. As the year comes to a close, we have put together a timeline of 2018’s best immigration moments. Take a look to catch up on what’s been happening in Canadian immigration this year!

January 2018: The province of Manitoba launches its own Express Entry aligned stream for skilled workers. In 2018 this stream sent over 1400 invitations to apply for Canadian permanent residence!

February 2018: Canada strengthens its commitment to family reunification. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announces it will commit to processing all new sponsorship applications within 12 months. Looking back, 80% of applications were processed in this timeframe!

March 2018: The Canadian Bureau for International Education announces that there are nearly half a million international students in Canada. At the end of 2018, Canada remains an increasingly popular option for international students.

April 2018: Canada relaxes its restrictions on inadmissibility for immigrants with medical conditions. These updates bring the regulations in line with current views on the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

May 2018: Canada announces $1 billion to fund newcomer services in Canada. The government of Canada introduces online tools to help newcomers find free settlement services near to them!

June 2018: Alberta opens two new PNP streams of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program: the Alberta Express Entry and Alberta Opportunity Stream. In 2018, 5,386 nomination certificates were issued!

July 2018: The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Project increases its intake from 2000 to 2500 applicants. If the success of the pilot continues these numbers will continue to increase.

August 2018: Quebec announces a new online application system for its Quebec Skilled Worker program. Modelling the program after Express Entry, the online application will make processing faster and more efficient.

September 2018: The Express Entry system celebrates 100 draws! By the 100th draw, there were a total of 213,102 invitations to apply issued.

October 2018: Toronto is named the fastest-growing tech-jobs market in North America!

November 2018: The IRCC releases new multi-year immigration targets for 2019-2021. Canada promises to welcome over one million newcomers in the next three years!

December 2018: Statistics Canada released the Labour Force Survey for November, and revealed that employment rose by 94,000 jobs in one month. The fastest-method for Canadian immigration is under the Express Entry system, which targets young, skilled workers.

Most importantly, the immigration highlights from 2018 have signalled to Canadians and citizens of countries around the world that this government is dedicated to welcoming more newcomers. 2018 marks another year of immigration success with Canadim, and we look forward to what is to come in 2019!
