Express Entry: There is Light at the End of the Tunnel

Much of the controversy surrounding Express Entry is that many people mistakenly believe that in order to be successful under this program, they need a job offer. I am here to tell you that an applicant does NOT need a job offer to receive an invitation to apply. Therefore, my message to any Express Entry hopefuls out there:

“There is a light at the end of the tunnel for your application to Canada. As Express Entry continues to select applicants, the passing score needed to receive an invitation to apply continues to get lower, making it easier to obtain your visa.”

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is the new way (since Jan 1, 2015) that Immigration Canada accepts applicants for Canadian Permanent Residence. It governs the:

As a general overview, here is how Express Entry system works (for a detailed description click here):

Express Entry Overview

  1. An applicant is eligible under one of the programs governed by Express Entry (listed above)
  2. The candidate then fills out an Expression of Interest application and is entered into a pool of prospective newcomers
  3. In the pool, the candidate is assigned a score based on their employment, educational and other adaptability factors, which are determined by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
  4. If your rank in the pool of candidates is deemed high enough, you will be invited to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence and be processed in as quickly as 6 months
  5. If you are not chosen, your expression of interest stays in the system for 12 months and then you are welcome to reapply

How do I Boost My CRS Score?

The CRS assigns a maximum of 1200 points. It would be almost impossible for someone to score a perfect 1200 so that should not be your goal. Your only goal in Express Entry should be to score high enough to be selected in one of the many draws they do periodically through the year.

There are many ways to boost your CRS score. Improving your language proficiency or obtaining more work experience can enhance your score but the single biggest factor that can increase your score is a Canadian job offer. The perception that many aspiring Canadians have about Express Entry is that a job offer is 100% required, but the facts do not support this perception:

What does this mean for you?

As you can clearly see from the graph above, the required CRS score needed to be awarded an invitation to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence is getting lower with each draw.

One other interesting aspect is that each consecutive draw invites more applicants. The first draw in January sent out 779 invitations. Cut to the most recent draw on March 20, 1620 invitations were sent out. There are two major facts that you should take away from this information:

  1. The CRS score needed to be invited to apply under Express Entry is getting lower by each consecutive draw and
  2. The number of invitations they are sending out is getting higher

So try your luck today and give Express Entry another chance to secure your Canadian status!
