IELTS and Canadian Immigration: what score do I need to qualify?

Proving language proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages is an essential part of almost every immigration pathway to the country! The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is the most popular language test used in the Canadian immigration process. Your language exam score has the potential to drastically increase your chances of gaining permanent resident status in Canada. Here’s how…

Language testing options for Canadian immigration

Canada has two official languages: English and French. Applicants for Canadian immigration can submit language proficiency tests in either of these languages. As most of Canada’s immigration programs are points-based and language is a central component to immigration requirements, having a strong score in a language proficiency exam can dramatically improve your chances.

In Canadian immigration, applicants have the choice to submit results from one of four testing options: IELTS, CELPIP, TEF,or TCF. The results from the test you have chosen will be converted to fit the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) ranking system. Please note that Quebec immigration uses different tests for language.

In Express Entry’s Federal Skilled Worker program, Canada’s fastest and most popular route for economic immigration, applicants must supply test results from one of these examinations. The mandatory minimum score is a CLB 7 in all categories which corresponds to a 6.0 in each category on the IELTS General Training.

Although CLB 7 good enough to be considered, at Canadim we suggest aiming for a CLB 9 which corresponds to an 8.0 in listening and a 7.0 in all other categories on the IELTS. With this score you will be competitive in the Express Entry pool, and ensure your best chances at Canadian permanent residence!

How to get your best score

Although taking a language examination can be a stress for some applicants, it actually provides an excellent opportunity to quickly gain points towards your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in Express Entry. With an increase of only a few CLB levels, your score has the potential to dramatically increase, and with it your chances of earning an Invitation to Apply for Canadian permanent residence.

At Canadim we offer complimentary IELTS training with our services. This extra push can make all the difference on the day of your test, and ensure that you can claim as many points as possible on the first try.

Don’t leave any points unclaimed in the immigration process. With some studying and guidance, the language portion of your application could be the factor that pushes your profile to the top of the Express Entry pool.
