What is a Canadian? Thoughts from Attorney Renaud Dery

I wanted to try to tackle a big question I get from time to time and that is what is a Canadian? It can’t be as simple as where you were born because I certainly feel like a Canadian and I wasn’t born here.

Perhaps a better question to ask is what makes us Canadian? In the spirit of Canada Day I want to share with you the story of Rimsha Masih, a 14 year old Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy that I believe truly exemplifies what makes us Canadian.

Rimsha Masih, said to have Down syndrome, was accused by a neighbor of burning pages of the Qu’ran. Despite the fact that her case was thrown out by the Pakistani Justice System and her accuser was most likely the culprit, she still spent 25 days in adult prison. I can’t begin to imagine how frightening a Pakistani prison would have been to a 14 year old girl with an alleged intellectual disability.

Even after her case was acquitted, Rimsha and her family were still in great danger from angry mobs and they received numerous death threats from the community. The family had no choice but to go into hiding.

Their hiding would be short lived thankfully because Canadian Immigration authorities came to the rescue and secretly took the entire family from Pakistan to the safety of Canadian borders.

I do not always agree with the decisions made by the Canadian Immigration authorities but I have no doubt they made the right decision, the Canadian decision, to bring the Masih family here.

Happy Canada Day Masih family, may this be the first of many!
