02 Oct, 2018 Thanks to immigration, Canadian population up by a half-million in past year!
According to a recent report, the Canadian population has increased by more than 500,000 in the past year, totalling at 37 million. By far the biggest factor influencing the population increase is the influx of new migrants coming into the country!
Population Increase: The Numbers
Between July 1st, 2017, and July 1st, 2018, the Canadian population increased by 518,588, according to Statistics Canada. This marks a population increase of 1.4%, the biggest gain in more than 60 years!
The population increase is mostly attributed to migrants entering Canada. This includes permanent residents immigrating through economic and family sponsorship pathways, as well as those who may be entering Canada temporarily, like work and study permit holders and hopeful asylum claimants.
Canada has a long-term strategy to accept a high number of immigrants each year as a way to offset the rapidly aging Canadian population.
New Migrants: How?
Many of Canada’s new immigrants came through economic channels for immigration. Economic immigration programs help foreign nationals who demonstrate the potential to join Canada’s workforce. Here are three of the most popular immigration pathways for skilled workers hoping to make a new home in Canada!
1 – Express Entry – Federal Skilled Worker (FSW): This program is for skilled workers with high levels of education and language proficiency. The program is highly competitive and only candidates with the most competitive profiles are selected.
2 – Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP): PNPs are designed to meet the unique labour needs of each province individually. Every province in Canada organizes several different PNP streams. Some PNPs are designed for foreign nationals with work experience in certain in-demand occupations, while other seek candidates with a connection to the province in terms of relatives, work experience, or education.
3 – Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP): The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIP), allows Canada’s four Atlantic provinces to hire foreign workers with the promise that the employer will assist the new worker with immigration and settlement in Canada.
