Our first weekly roundup of the new year, and it’s a good one! Two Express Entry draws kick off the new year, Trump extends the ban on H-1B visas, and temporary residents are given more time to restore their status in Canada.

The government has announced an extension to a temporary policy that grants additional time to Candidates in Canada who have expired visas.Visitors, students, and workers whose valid temporary status expired, or expires, between January 30, 2020, and May 31, 2021, will have until August 31, 2021, to restore their status. The majority of Canadians believe that temporary foreign workers have a positive impact on Canada’s agricultural sector and support permanent immigration options for them.The Nanos poll, commissioned by Canadian Senator Ratna Omidvar, highlights Canadians broad support of seasonal temporary workers in the agricultural sector. Despite pleas from U.S. companies and immigration advocates, on Dec. 31, the Trump administration chose to extend the ban on most classes of work visas and green cards. The rationale for the immigration ban, as stated in the executive order, was to protect American workers and stimulate a faster economic recovery. [Read more]
In the first Express Entry draw of the year, Canada issued 250 invitations to Express Entry candidates to apply for Canadian permanent residence. Today’s 171st Express Entry draw was specific to Provincial Nominee Class candidates. The minimum CRS cut-off score for this draw was 813. [Read more]
British Columbia invites 168 candidates to their provincial nominee program (BC PNP) in the first PNP draw of 2021! BC PNP is primarily for candidates who have a job offer from a BC employer. In some cases, holders of a graduate diploma from an eligible BC educational institution can be eligible to apply without a job offer. [Read more]
In the second draw of the week, Canada issued 4,750 invitations to Express Entry candidates to apply for Canadian permanent residence. Yesterday’s 172nd Express Entry draw was specific to Canadian Experience Class candidates. The minimum CRS cut-off score for this draw was 461. [Read more]
The December 2020 Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey posted today shows the first net loss of jobs for the Canadian economy since April. In December, the Canadian economy lost 63,000 jobs, essentially nullifying the gains of 62,000 jobs made in November. [Read more]
