English Exams for Canadian Immigration

Any person who wishes to immigrate to Canada through the popular Express Entry system, must provide proof of proficiency in either English or French. To prove English-language proficiency, the Canadian government will only accept two tests: the IELTS General Exam, or the CELPIP General Exam.

In order to be the principal applicant in both the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) and Canadian Experience Class(CEC) of Express Entry, a person must have language test scores equivalent to the Canadian Language Benchmark of Level 7 (CLB 7).

Canadian Language Benchmark Level 7 - Required Scores
Category
IELTS
CELPIP
Listening6.07.0
Speaking6.07.0
Reading6.07.0
Writing6.07.0

There are no distinct advantages to taking either test over the other. However, the availability of the CELPIP in more locations may make it easier for prospective immigrants who have been experiencing difficulty in registering for the IELTS due to high demand.

CELPIP in India

The CELPIP was originally only available in Canada. However, over the last two years, the CELPIP has spread to be offered in a number of other countries with high rates of immigration to Canada. India is the latest country to be added to the list.

According to the CELPIP website, the test will be available in the city of Chandigarh, costing $200 CAD. It is possible that if this testing location is successful, the test will expand to be offered in other locations in India.
