Healthcare Industry the Driving Force Behind Canada’s Current Job Market Growth

Jobs in Canada’s healthcare industry have seen exceptional growth in recent years. A study has revealed that healthcare is the biggest contributor in boosting Canada’s major job market growth, while occupations in business services and transportation followed close behind.

A total of 249,000 healthcare jobs were added in the last five years, contributing to approximately one fifth of Canada’s total job market. Professional and business services ranked second with 210,000 positions added, while the transportation and education sectors rounded out the top four with 143,000 and 118,000 positions added.

This past September, it was found that employment increased by 54,000, with over 55% of the growth coming from those working in healthcare and social assistance. Over the past year, this sector has grown by 134,000 or 2.1%.

While there has been a spike in job growth in Canada, there continues to be a shortage of highly-skilled workers who can fulfill these roles, specifically in healthcare, education and IT. In the first quarter of 2019 alone, a total of 435,000 positions went unfilled. To address the issue, more employers are choosing to recruit foreign workers who have the qualifications and skills required.

Immigration Options for Healthcare Professionals

If you are a healthcare professional looking to work in Canada, there are several options to consider. If you receive a job offer, you may be eligible for British Columbia or Saskatchewan’s Healthcare Professional streams. Saskatchewan has also recently expanded its SINP occupations in-demand list to include a few healthcare positions, such as occupational therapists and chiropractors.

Alternatively, the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program of Express Entry specifically targets skilled workers and does not require a job offer. With a requirement of at least one year of full-time work experience and good language proficiency, FSW is a great immigration option for those in the healthcare field looking to get permanent residency in Canada quickly and efficiently!
