Canada is home to the longest coastline in the world and the fourth largest ocean territory in the world. The goal behind the startup project is to take advantage of this, and develop a strategy to support Canada’s valuable ocean industry.
This sector of the Canadian economy already employs approximately 350,000 people and generates 36 billion dollars annually for the Canadian economy. More than half of that revenue is generated in Atlantic Canada.
In order to stay competitive, there is a need for the development and advancement of marine technologies. The mandate of the Ocean Startup Project is to support startups and encourage the increased use of these technologies within the industry.
The project also aims to help businesses recruit employees with the necessary skills. The government has stated that, in particular, it is aiming to encourage the participation of under-represented groups such as women and Indigenous people.
The Innovation Superclusters Initiative connects businesses, academic institutions, and not-for-profit organizations. This combination of knowledge will serve to support technological innovation and job growth across the country.
Canada continues to face a shortage of skilled workers. Last year, a survey by the Business Development Bank of Canada showed that 53 percent of small and medium-sized businesses did not have enough skilled labour to meet their needs, forcing them to limit the development of their business.
For skilled workers interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, the fastest and easiest way of immigrating to Canada is through the Express Entry system. Express Entry is used to process the majority of Canadian immigration applications for skilled and qualified workers who want to come to Canada.
If you are eligible to apply to any of these programs, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), often referred to as a profile, to the Express Entry system. Approximately every two weeks, the Canadian government conducts a draw where they issue invitations to apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residence to the highest-ranking profiles in the pool of Express Entry candidates.
Upon receiving an ITA, candidates can then submit a complete application for Canadian permanent residence, which will be processed within four to six months.
With the number of unfulfilled jobs continuing to increase, and an aging Canadian working population, now is an opportune time for skilled foreign workers who are looking to work and live in Canada to take that first step.
