Population of Prince Edward Island is on Target to Reach 160,000 by 2022

The province of PEI is growing at the fastest rate in the country, a recent study has revealed. For the fourth year in a row, immigration has been the top reason for the province’s major population spike. Based on projections from Statistics Canada, the Atlantic province is on target to grow by another 1.5% next year.

Immigration continues to be the driving factor for PEI’s population growth with the province having welcomed approximately 2,000 newcomers per year, in the past four years. Last year, a total of 2,267 immigrants had chosen PEI as their new hometown, an increase of 7.8% in comparison to the previous twelve months. 

With the workforce having grown by 3.1 percent and unemployment rate currently sitting at 8.9 percent, the province is additionally hoping to retain immigrants in order to fulfill employment needs. PEI’s director of immigration, Mary Hunter, noted that “if the domestic workforce isn’t available then immigration needs to be there to complement those needs”. She also mentioned that retention rates are at 77 percent for immigration through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot program.

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot program launched two years ago to attract skilled workers to Canada’s four Atlantic provinces that are facing labour shortages and an aging population, including Prince Edward Island. To qualify for the program, applicants are required to have a job offer from a designated employer in an Atlantic province

For those who have at least one year of full-time work experience and good language proficiency in English or French may be eligible for Canadian immigration through the Express Entry system. Once applicants are accepted into the pool, they will also be able to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the PEI PNP Express Entry stream. 

Successful candidates who obtain a provincial nomination with receive 600 points added to their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, virtually guaranteeing them an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in the following Express Entry draw.
