Scams on the Rise During COVID-19 Pandemic

As fears surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic continue to grow, officials have noticed a rise in scams. Fraudulent businesses are attempting to capitalize on the crisis in order to gain access to people’s bank accounts or sensitive personal information.

Health officials and the police warn about a rise in email scams aiming to steal people’s money or personal information. In one such scam, people are receiving emails informing them that they have been contaminated by the novel coronavirus. It asks the recipient to provide their credit card details to pay for a shipment of medication to treat the virus.

The Canadian Red Cross has also warned of a text message scam that claims to be sent by their organization and offers people masks in exchange for personal information.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is reminding people that only hospitals or clinics can test for coronavirus, and that public health officials will never ask for your financial or personal information over the phone or by email.

At the same time, we at Canadim would like to remind you that immigration fraud continues to be a growing concern.

Canadim representatives communicate with clients about their immigration profile exclusively through email and telephone, and not through social media platforms. All email correspondence from employees at Canadim will be from an “@canadim.com” email address.

You will never be contacted by a Canadim representative unless you have previously submitted an online immigration assessment, or have subscribed to a Canadim newsletter.

Finally, always be certain to verify the identity of any immigration representative you are interested in working with. You can verify Canadim Law Firm through our Google Reviews, and can be certain of Attorney Dery’s good standing by finding his registration with the Barreau du Québec

What to do if you think you are a victim of fraud

At Canadim we take immigration fraud very seriously. If you are approached by someone claiming to be a Canadim representative and are feeling unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out to us through our social media channels or email us directly at attorney@canadim.com. You can also report immigration fraud with the Canada Border Services Agency.
