On Monday evening, Trump tweeted: “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”

He has not yet released details as to which immigration programs will be affected.

Trump has already limited immigration from China and certain European countries, and visa processing of all kinds has been suspended for the last few weeks. Trump believes halting immigration has contributed to slowing the spread of the pandemic within the US.

Today, the US has almost 800,000 confirmed cases and over 40,000 deaths.

While the Trump administration continues its trend of cracking down on US immigration, Canada continues to accept applications for temporary and permanent residents

In Canada, immigration continues to be a priority. The government is aware of the crucial role that immigration plays in the Canadian economy, and continues to hold Express Entry draws every week, extending invitations for permanent residence to eligible candidates.

Before COVID-19, the Canadian government stated it was planning to admit more than one million new immigrants by 2022. So far, it is still on track to reach this target.
