Land in Canada as a PR

Once approved, you arrive in Canada as a Permanent Resident — with the right to live, work, and study anywhere in the country, access universal healthcare, sponsor family, and qualify for Canadian citizenship after three years.

Three Pathways to Canadian Permanent Residency

Most US-based applicants qualify for more than one Canadian PR program. The right choice depends on your profession, education, language scores, and how quickly you need to move. Our lawyers identify the fastest path for your specific profile.

FASTEST PR

Express Entry

Best if you have a degree + skilled work experience

Canada's flagship economic immigration system. Your profile is ranked against other candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and the highest-scoring candidates receive Invitations to Apply in draws held approximately every two weeks.

  • ~115,000 candidates invited per year
  • Processing as fast as 6 months once your application is complete
  • No Canadian job offer required
  • Category-based draws for tech, healthcare, trades, and French-speaking candidates
TARGETED

Provincial Nominee Programs

Best if you have specialised skills or a province in mind

Each Canadian province runs its own immigration streams tailored to local labour needs. Securing a provincial nomination is one of the most powerful ways to dramatically boost your CRS score and unlock a fast-tracked PR pathway.

  • +600 CRS points if nominated through an EE-aligned PNP
  • Tech-focused streams in BC, Alberta, Ontario, and more
  • Often the fastest route for in-demand occupations
SKILLED WORKERS

Federal Skilled Worker

Best if you have foreign skilled work experience

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is one of the three streams managed under Express Entry. It targets candidates with foreign skilled work experience, strong education, and good English or French — the typical profile of US-based professionals.

  • One year of skilled work experience (within the last 10 years)
  • Minimum 67/100 on the FSW eligibility points grid
  • Minimum CLB 7 (English or French) — no Canadian job offer required

What Canadian Permanent Residency Means

Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) gives you the right to live, work, and study anywhere in Canada indefinitely — with full access to universal healthcare, public education, and most social benefits available to Canadian citizens. Unlike a temporary work visa, your PR status doesn't depend on an employer.

Express Entry can process applications in as little as 6 months from the date you submit a complete application after receiving an Invitation to Apply — one of the fastest economic immigration timelines among major destinations.

Canada actively recruits the same skilled professionals the US labour market values: software engineers, data scientists, healthcare workers, engineers, financial professionals, researchers, and skilled tradespeople. The Comprehensive Ranking System rewards exactly the credentials that make you competitive in the US — strong education, professional experience, and English (or French) proficiency.

Once you're a Canadian PR, you can sponsor your spouse and children, travel freely in and out of Canada, and apply for Canadian citizenship after just three years of physical presence. Many US residents maintain remote work with their existing employer while building their Canadian life.

Common Questions and Answers
About Canadian PR & Express Entry

What is Express Entry? +

Express Entry is the Canadian government's online application management system for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Eligible candidates create a profile and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-scoring candidates receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Permanent Residence in draws held approximately every two weeks — with an average of around 115,000 candidates invited each year.

Who is eligible for Canadian Permanent Residency through Express Entry? +

Individuals with university or college degrees, skilled work experience, and moderate proficiency in English or French are ideal Express Entry candidates. The baseline requirement is at least one year of skilled work experience in the last 10 years, a post-secondary education recognised through an ECA, and CLB 7 in either official language. Most US-based skilled workers easily meet the baseline — the real question is how competitive your CRS score is.

What is the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)? +

The CRS is the points-based system Canada uses to rank Express Entry candidates. It scores you out of 1,200 points across age, education, language ability, work experience, and adaptability factors — including your spouse's profile, if applicable. The highest-ranked candidates receive Invitations to Apply in periodic draws. A provincial nomination automatically adds 600 points, effectively guaranteeing an ITA.

How long does it take to get Canadian PR through Express Entry? +

Once you submit a complete application after receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), the service standard processing time is 6 months. The full timeline — from creating your profile to landing in Canada as a PR — depends on how quickly you receive an ITA. Your profile remains valid in the pool for 12 months, and once an ITA is issued you have 60 days to submit your full application. Provincial Nominee Programs can take longer overall but often deliver an ITA faster for in-demand profiles.

What is the difference between Express Entry and a Provincial Nominee Program? +

Express Entry is a federal system run by IRCC. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are run by individual provinces to nominate candidates who match local labour needs. The two systems work together: most provinces have an "enhanced" PNP stream that nominates candidates already in the Express Entry pool, automatically adding 600 CRS points and almost guaranteeing an ITA. PNPs are often the fastest route for candidates whose CRS is too low for federal-only draws.

Do I need a Canadian job offer to qualify for PR? +

No. The Federal Skilled Worker program does not require a Canadian job offer — it's designed for applicants with foreign work experience. A valid Canadian job offer supported by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) can add 50–200 CRS points, but it's not required. Some Provincial Nominee streams do require a job offer in the province; others (especially tech-focused streams) do not. We identify which programs match your profile based on your existing credentials.

Can my spouse and children come with me? +

Yes. Your spouse and dependent children are included on your Permanent Residence application. They receive PR status at the same time you do — with full rights to live, work, study, and access healthcare in Canada. Spouses don't need to qualify independently. In fact, your spouse's education, language ability, and work experience can add additional CRS points to your application.

Can I apply for Canadian PR while still living in the US? +

Yes. You don't need to be physically present in Canada to apply. You can submit your Express Entry profile and complete the entire PR process while continuing to live and work in the United States. You only need to relocate once you receive your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and choose to land in Canada. From the day you land, you officially become a Canadian Permanent Resident.

What are the Canadian PR requirements I need to meet? +

Core requirements vary by program but typically include: at least one year of skilled work experience within the last 10 years, a post-secondary education credential assessed against Canadian standards through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), an approved English or French language test demonstrating Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 or higher, sufficient settlement funds (scaling with family size, unless exempt), a clean criminal record, and a passing medical exam. Our lawyers verify each requirement is met before submitting.

How long is Canadian PR valid for? +

Canadian PR status itself does not expire. To maintain it, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (two years) within every five-year period. Your PR card — the physical document proving your status — is typically valid for five years and must be renewed. After three years of physical presence as a PR, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Do I need a lawyer to apply for Canadian PR? +

It's not legally required, but Canadian PR applications involve precise legal analysis — selecting the right program, calculating CRS accurately, securing supporting documents, and navigating provincial streams. Errors commonly cause delays or refusals, and refused applications make future submissions significantly more difficult. An experienced Canadian immigration lawyer improves the quality of your application and your chances of approval the first time.
