How to Move to Canada from the US in 3 Steps

01

Free Eligibility Assessment

We review your education, work experience, age, language ability, and personal goals — then identify which of Canada's 80+ immigration programs you qualify for. Most US-based applicants qualify for more than one pathway, and choosing the right one matters.

02

We Build Your Strategy

Our Canadian immigration lawyers select the fastest, strongest route for your profile — Express Entry, a Provincial Nominee Program, or a work/study permit pathway. We prepare and submit a complete, lawyer-reviewed application with the rigour Canadian PR demands.

03

Land in Canada

Once approved, you arrive in Canada — with the right to live, work, and study anywhere in the country, access universal healthcare, sponsor your family, and apply for Canadian citizenship after three years. Dual US/Canadian citizenship is permitted.

Three Pathways to Canada for US Residents

There is no single way to move to Canada from the US. Most Americans qualify for more than one program — the right choice depends on your background, your timeline, and whether you want permanent residence right away or a stepping-stone first. Our lawyers identify the strongest path for your specific profile.

FASTEST PR

Express Entry

Best if you have a degree + skilled work experience

Canada's flagship economic immigration system manages applications for the Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. Approximately 80% of Express Entry applications are processed within six months — making it one of the fastest immigration pathways in the world.

  • Permanent Residence in approximately 6–12 months
  • No Canadian job offer required for FSW
  • Spouse and children included on your application
TARGETED

Provincial Nominee Programs

Best if you have a province in mind or specialised skills

Each Canadian province and territory operates its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) tailored to local labour market needs. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score — effectively guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence under Express Entry.

  • +600 CRS points if nominated under an EE-aligned PNP
  • Tech, healthcare, trades, and entrepreneur streams available
  • Often the fastest path for in-demand occupations
STEPPING STONE

Work or Study Permit

Best if you want to build Canadian experience first

If you don't yet qualify for direct PR, a Canadian work or study permit can be the bridge. CUSMA (the updated NAFTA) makes it easier for many US professionals to obtain work permits, and Canadian work or study experience strongly boosts your future PR application.

  • CUSMA work permits for eligible US professionals
  • Intra-company transfers for multinational employees
  • Study permit + post-graduation work permit → PR pathway

Why Americans Are Moving to Canada

Each month, more than 1,000 Americans move to Canada — for new opportunities, for family, for healthcare, or simply for a different way of life. Canada plans to welcome over 200,000 economic immigrants per year between 2026 and 2028, and US citizens and green card holders are among the strongest candidates for economic immigration programs.

You don't have to give up your US citizenship. Canada and the United States both allow dual citizenship — you can become a Canadian permanent resident, and eventually a Canadian citizen, without renouncing your American passport.

The credentials that make you successful in the US — a degree, professional work experience, English proficiency — are exactly what Canada's Comprehensive Ranking System rewards. Most Americans qualify for multiple immigration programs, and many are surprised to learn just how attainable Canadian PR really is.

Once you're a permanent resident, you can live and work anywhere in Canada, access universal healthcare, sponsor your spouse and children, and apply for Canadian citizenship after three years. Many Americans also keep working remotely for their US employer while building their Canadian life.

Common Questions and Answers
About Moving to Canada from the USA

Do I have to give up my US citizenship to move to Canada? +

No. Both Canada and the United States allow dual citizenship. You can become a Canadian permanent resident — and eventually a Canadian citizen — without renouncing your US passport or citizenship.

How long does it take to move to Canada from the US? +

It depends on the program. Express Entry processes most complete applications within six months from Invitation to Apply, with total timelines typically running 6 to 12 months. Provincial Nominee Programs may take longer overall but can be faster for certain in-demand profiles. Work and study permits can often be obtained within weeks to a few months.

Do I need a job offer in Canada to qualify? +

For most pathways, no. The Federal Skilled Worker Program under Express Entry does not require a Canadian job offer. Many Provincial Nominee Programs also accept candidates without a job offer. A job offer can add CRS points and unlock additional streams, but it is not a prerequisite for the majority of US-based applicants we work with.

I'm a US green card holder, not a citizen. Can I still apply? +

Yes. Canadian immigration programs are based on your qualifications — education, work experience, age, language ability — not your nationality. Green card holders living in the US qualify for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and most work permit categories on the same terms as US citizens. Some specific routes (such as CUSMA work permits) are reserved for US citizens only.

Can my spouse and children move with me? +

Yes. Your spouse or common-law partner and your dependent children are included on your Permanent Residence application and receive PR status at the same time you do. They can live, work, study, and access healthcare in Canada from day one. Your spouse's qualifications can also add CRS points to your application.

What about taxes — do I have to file in both countries? +

The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income, so US citizens generally must continue filing US tax returns even after moving to Canada. The US–Canada tax treaty is designed to prevent double taxation, and most Americans living in Canada do not end up paying tax twice — but you will typically need to file in both countries. We recommend working with a cross-border tax professional alongside your immigration application.

What is healthcare like in Canada? +

Canadian permanent residents and citizens have access to publicly funded healthcare through their province of residence. Coverage typically includes hospital and physician services without out-of-pocket cost at the point of care. Unlike the US system, healthcare is generally not tied to your employer — meaning you remain covered between jobs, during career changes, or in retirement.

Can I keep my US job and work remotely from Canada? +

Many Americans do exactly this. Once you're a Canadian permanent resident, you can live in Canada and continue working remotely for a US employer, subject to your employer's policies and tax considerations in both countries. Some clients also use the Intra-Company Transfer pathway to formally relocate within their existing multinational employer.

What if I have a past criminal record — like a DUI? +

A past criminal record can make you criminally inadmissible to Canada, even for relatively minor offences. Since December 18, 2018, impaired driving offences (DUI/DWI) are classified as serious criminality under Canadian immigration law. Inadmissibility is fixable in most cases — but it must be addressed before you apply. Mention it during your assessment and we'll factor it into your strategy.

Do I need a lawyer to apply? +

It is not legally required, but Canadian immigration involves precise legal analysis — selecting the right program, calculating CRS scores accurately, securing the right supporting documents, and navigating dozens of provincial streams. Errors or omissions commonly cause delays or refusals, and a refused application makes future submissions more difficult. An experienced Canadian immigration lawyer improves the quality of your file and your chances of approval the first time.
