Plans to boost immigration to the province

Newfoundland and Labrador continues to make ongoing efforts to accelerate immigration to their province and plans to increase the number of permanent residents annually to 5,100 by 2026. This year, Immigration, Refugee, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allocated the province 1,050 nominations through the Newfoundland Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP), and the entry of 442 applications under the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). To help ease the process for immigrants when tripling immigration levels, Newfoundland and Labrador plan to undertake the following initiatives:

  • Offering settlement services such as employment and training, foreign qualification recognition, language training, and cultural supports
  • Creating a new online application system to ease and expedite the process of newcomers arriving to Canada to settle in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Increasing immigration staff to support newcomers navigating the immigration system
  • Providing English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors in the school system for students Kindergarten to Grade 12
