In response to concerns voiced by its international students and educational institutions, the government of Quebec announced on Thursday April 30th that it will automatically extend Quebec Acceptance Certificates (CAQ) that were set to expire between April 30th, 2020, and December 31st, 2020.

“This decision is intended to facilitate the steps that must be taken by foreign students who were in the process of completing their study program but who must extend their stay in Quebec due to the current health state of emergency and the temporary interruption of their courses,” states the Quebec Immigration Ministry website.

Foreign students will not be required to pay any fees for extending their CAQ.

A CAQ is necessary for any foreign nationals interested in attending a post-secondary institution in the province of Quebec for a period longer than 6 months, they must obtain a CAQ. Foreign nationals are only eligible to submit a study permit application after they have obtained a CAQ.

Students who wish to obtain a CAQ for the fall semester or those who have a CAQ that expires after December 31, 2020 will have to reapply, the ministry said.
