15,000 Applications to be Accepted Under the Parents and Grandparents Program

The IRCC has announced the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) application process for 2022. Another PGP lottery will be held which will draw from the 2020 interest to sponsor pool.

The IRCC has announced the application process for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) 2022. 

The announcement states that the IRCC will be accepting up to 15,000 complete applications for sponsorship under the Parents and Grandparents Program this year.

Invitations to apply will be sent out over the next few weeks to 23,100 interested sponsors. Potential sponsors to receive an invitation to apply will be randomly selected from the 2020 PGP pool of submissions. This is similar to the approach the IRCC took for the 2021 PGP intake. 

Applicants who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 but did not receive an invitation to sponsor in the past years should check the email account they provided when they submitted their interest.

Who is Eligible for the PGP 2022?

You may be eligible for the Parent and Grandparent Program to sponsor if:

• you completed an interest to sponsor form on IRCC’s website between  October 13, 2020 and November 3, 2020
• are at least 18 years old
• currently live in Canada
• are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
• Can show that you meet the minimum necessary income as outlined by the IRCC

The Minimum Necessary Income is an important eligibility factor for the PGP. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the IRCC will use a lower income requirement for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents. For the tax years during the pandemic, 2020 and 2021, the income requirement will only be the minimum necessary income. In addition, temporary COVID-19 benefits and employment insurance benefits will be allowed to be included toward the sponsor’s income. This is to help ensure that applicants are not penalised for temporary loss of sponsors income during the pandemic.

The proof of necessary income is to be provided after an interest in sponsorship has been expressed through the online form. Applicants who are selected to apply and who do not meet the minimum necessary income will not have their applications approved.

Not Eligible for PGP 2022? You May Want to Consider the Super Visa

Those who wish to reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada, but who do not receive an invitation this year, may consider having their parents or grandparents apply for a super visa. A super visa is a multiple entry visitor visa specifically for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows super visa holders to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time, with the option to extend their visit by up to 2 years at a time without leaving the country.
