Work Permits Expiring in 2026: What Temporary Residents Should Know

According to IRCC, in the first three months of 2026, more than 314,000 work permits in Canada will expire, and approximately 1.4 million permits will have expired by the end of 2026. This means that many temporary residents will potentially lose their legal status during this time.

Who Is Affected by These Work Permit Changes?

Most of these permits are part of the International Mobility Program and the people affected are mainly Post-Graduation Work Permit holders and Spousal Open Work Permit holders who are already contributing to, working, and living in Canada.

Canada’s Immigration Targets Are Decreasing

As indicated in the recent immigration levels plans, the federal government has made it very clear to offer fewer immigration spots in the coming years. Immigration targets are lower, which means fewer people will be able to move from temporary status to permanent residency, even if they are qualified.

Because of these upcoming changes, staying in Canada as a temporary foreign worker will still be possible in 2026, but it will likely be more difficult than before. For this reason, planning strategically is more important than ever.

This includes reviewing all available immigration options, gathering the required documents, and submitting applications as soon as possible.

Provincial Nominee Programs in 2026

According to the supplementary information for the 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan, a positive aspect of Canadian immigration in 2026 is that Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are expected to have many more spots available in 2026 and could even increase by more than 65 percent compared to 2025. For many workers, this may become the main way to stay in Canada.
