Canada is known for welcoming immigrants from around the world. With a variety of immigration pathways available, here are the most popular Canadian immigration programs, including new pathways in 2025.

Express Entry

Express Entry (EE) is one of the fastest ways for skilled workers to apply for permanent residency (PR) in Canada. EE uses a point-based system that invites applicants in a competitive pool of applicants who possess the highest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score to apply for PR.

Express Entry has three main federal economic programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program: Individuals with work experience outside of Canada in jobs that are in high demand in the Canadian labour market.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program: Professionals with experience in occupations such as carpenters, electricians, or plumbers may apply for this EE stream.
  • Canadian Experience Class: Individuals who are already working in Canada with at least one year of experience in a skilled occupation can apply for this EE stream.

To qualify for EE, you need to pay the required fees, meet certain language, education, and work experience requirements, and prove you have the right skills to contribute to Canada’s economy.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allows provinces and territories to nominate individuals for permanent residency based on their local labour market needs. If you have the skills and experience that a particular province is looking for, you have an advantage for receiving an ITA to live and work in that province. Each province sets their own eligibility requirements, and they use different points systems to determine who can apply or receive an invitation. Points are typically based on a combination of age, work experience, education, language, and connections to the province.

Family Class Sponsorship

The Family Class Sponsorship program is designed to reunite families. If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor your spouse, child, parent, or another close family member who currently lives abroad to come to Canada.

Start-Up Visa Program

The Start-Up Visa Program is a program available to entrepreneurs who want to start a business in Canada. If you have an innovative business idea that will contribute to the Canadian economy and create employment opportunities for Canadian residents, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through this immigration program/pathway.

New Canadian Immigration Pathways in 2025

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that there will be new immigration pathways in 2025 to help meet Canada’s labour market demands:

Enhanced Caregiver Pilot Programs

In addition to Canada’s existing Caregiver program, this new immigration pathway aims to attract more caregivers to meet Canada’s growing demand. Successful applicants, such as home childcare workers and home support workers, will receive permanent residency upon arrival, making it an easier route to residency in Canada.

Rural Community Immigration Pilot

The Rural Community Immigration Pilot pathway to permanent residency targets professionals willing to live and work in smaller, rural communities across Canada. These communities have a high demand for skilled workers to fill labour shortages in the area.

Francophone Community Immigration Pilot

This immigration pathway aims to attracting French-speaking professionals to work in small communities outside of Quebec. This will help strengthen Canada’s economy and increase Francophone communities across Canada. For French speakers abroad, this is a great immigration pathway to settle in Canada.

Manitoba’s West Central Immigration Initiative Pilot

The Manitoba West Central Immigration Initiative Pilot program’s initiative is to attract skilled workers who are willing to live and work in Manitoba’s West Central region in efforts to meet labour market demands in the area. Potential candidates may be invited to apply for permanent residency and settle in Manitoba.

Canada offers a range of immigration pathways, each designed to meet different needs. Whether you’re a skilled worker, entrepreneur, caregiver, or someone looking to reunite with family, there’s likely a program that fits your circumstances.
