New 2026 Express Entry Pathways for Canadian PR

Published on: February 24th, 2026

Recently, one of Canada’s main permanent residence pathways, Express Entry (EE), has expanded its category-based selection process. The EE program is now more focused on highly skilled professionals who can support Canada’s labour market and economy. Priority is being given to candidates who are already contributing to the Canadian economy.

Canada’s New Strategy

Canada has introduced important changes to its immigration system under the 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan. Amongst the changes, Canada has recently introduced three new Express Entry categories:

1) Researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience

2) Transport occupations

3) Specialized foreign military applicants recruited into key roles within the Canadian Armed Forces

Existing Express Entry Categories

In addition to these new categories, the 2026 category-based selection system continues to include:

  1. French-language proficiency
  2. Healthcare and social services occupations
  3. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
  4. Trade occupations
  5. Education occupations
  6. Physicians with Canadian work experience

Overall, by introducing more streams, Canada is taking a more strategic approach to immigration by directly addressing critical labour shortages.

Do I qualify for express Entry?

First-Ever Draw for Physicians with Canadian work experience

One of the most significant EE draws this year was the first Express Entry draw for Physicians with Canadian work experience, held on February 19, 2026. In that round, 391 Invitations to Apply were issued, with a minimum CRS score of 169, the lowest ever CRS score. This demonstrates that when Canada has an urgent need in a specific profession, category-based draws can result in significantly lower CRS thresholds, making it easier to receive an ITA.

Strong Express Entry Profile

For foreign workers, it is now especially important to position your profile carefully and strategically as Canadian work experience is becoming more valuable and there are more opportunities in Canada for you as well. Lower CRS scores are possible when your profession aligns with Canada’s priority sectors and job shortages.

Express Entry Pathway to Canadian Permanent Residence

Express Entry remains a popular pathway to Canadian permanent residence. The recent category additions and successes show that Canada continues to create opportunities for the professionals who will continue to contribute to the success of the economy.
