What is a Spousal Open Work Permit?

A Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) is a work authorization issued to the spouse or common-law partner of certain temporary foreign workers and international students in Canada.

Unlike employer-specific permits, a SOWP allows you to:

  • Work for any employer in Canada
  • Work full-time or part-time
  • Gain Canadian work experience, which may support future permanent residence applications

Who Can Apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit?

Eligibility depends on your spouse’s status in Canada. There are two main categories:

1. Spouses of Temporary Foreign Workers

You may qualify if your spouse:

You must also:

  • Be in a genuine relationship
  • Ensure your spouse’s work permit remains valid for at least 16 months after your application is submitted

2. Spouses of International Students 

You may qualify if your spouse is studying in Canada and is enrolled in:

  • A master’s program (16 months or longer)
  • A doctoral (PhD) program
  • An eligible professional degree program, including:
    • Medicine (MD)
    • Law (JD, LLB, BCL)
    • Dentistry (DDS, DMD)
    • Pharmacy (PharmD)
    • Nursing (BSN, BScN, BN)
    • Engineering (BEng, BASc)
    • Education (BEd)
    • Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
    • Optometry (OD)

Processing times currently average 240 days, but can vary depending on application volume and individual circumstances.

How Long is a Spousal Open Work Permit Valid?

Your SOWP is typically valid for the same duration as your spouse’s permit.

  • If your spouse extends their permit, you must reapply to extend yours
  • Your permit will not exceed your passport’s validity

Can I include my dependents?

No. As of January 21, 2025, dependent family members are no longer eligible under this program. Children may apply separately for a visitor record.

Do I need a medical exam?

You may be required to complete a medical exam, depending on your situation and intended occupation.
