What is an Express Entry Draw?

An Express Entry draw is how IRCC selects candidates from the Express Entry pool and invites them to apply for permanent residence.

IRCC typically holds draws every two weeks, although the schedule can vary depending on immigration targets and labour market needs.

Express Entry manages applications for Canada’s main economic immigration programs:

During each draw, IRCC issues Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates based on:

Category-Based Express Entry Draws

In addition to general draws, IRCC conducts category-based Express Entry draws to target candidates who meet specific economic or governmental priorities.

These draws often feature lower CRS cut-off scores because they focus on smaller, high-demand talent pools.

Recent priority categories include:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare and social services
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
  • Skilled trades
  • Agriculture and agri-food
  • Education occupations

Immigration Tip 💡

These categories evolve based on Canada’s labour market needs. Even if you are not currently eligible, future draws may target your profile.

How to Increase Your Chances of Receiving an ITA

If your CRS score falls below recent cut-offs, you should actively improve your profile.

Here are some proven strategies:

  • Improve your language test scores (English or French)
  • Gain additional skilled work experience
  • Complete a higher level of education
  • Apply through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Optimize your profile for category-based draws
  • Consider listing your spouse as the principal applicant

For example, improving your French score could make you eligible for a French-language category draw, significantly increasing your chances of receiving an ITA.

Or if you are married and your spouse has a profile that could fall under a prioritized draw category, consider submitting a second profile with your spouse as the principal applicant.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the next Express Entry draw?

There is no set schedule for Express Entry draws. Typically, you can expect a new Express Entry draw at least every two weeks.

For more information about trends and predictions, please visit our dedicated article When is the Next Express Entry Draw?

How do I get selected in an Express Entry draw?

To receive an ITA, you must:

  • Submit an Express Entry profile
  • Achieve a competitive CRS score, or
  • Qualify for a targeted category-based draw

What is the lowest CRS score ever selected?

CRS cut-offs vary with each draw.

  • Lowest ever: 75 CRS points (CEC draw, February 2021)
  • Lowest all-program draw: 413 CRS points

How many candidates are invited in each draw?

The number of ITAs varies depending on:

  • Immigration targets
  • Labour market demand
  • The number and quality of candidates in the pool

What happens after I receive an ITA?

If selected, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and have 60 days to submit your complete application for permanent residence.

Does a job offer increase my chances?

A job offer does not guarantee an ITA.
