If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada with your spouse or common-law partner, you may qualify under the Inland Spousal Sponsorship stream of Canada’s Family Class immigration program.
This pathway allows your partner to apply for Canadian permanent residence (PR) from within Canada — and, in many cases, to apply for an open work permit while the application is processing.
Below, we outline Inland vs. Outland sponsorship, eligibility requirements, processing times, and how Canadim can guide you through the process.
The primary difference between Inland and Outland spousal sponsorship is where the sponsored person resides during processing.
Inland Sponsorship
Choose Inland sponsorship if:
Inland applications are processed while the applicant remains in Canada. If the applicant leaves Canada and is denied re-entry, the application could be considered abandoned.
Outland Sponsorship
Choose Outland sponsorship if:
Work Permit Eligibility
In both Inland and Outland sponsorship streams, applicants who hold a valid temporary status in Canada may also be eligible to apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit, allowing them to work while their permanent residence application is being processed.

If you are eligible for Inland sponsorship, you are also eligible to apply for Outland sponsorship. In many cases, Outland is strategically preferable as it offers shorter processing times.
To sponsor your spouse or common-law partner from inside Canada, you must:
The relationship must also meet eligibility requirements established by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):
Eligible Relationship Types
Spouse
A legally valid marriage recognized under Canadian law (including same-sex marriage).
Common-law Partner
You have lived together continuously for at least 12 consecutive months in a marriage-like relationship.
Strong documentation proving the genuineness of your relationship is essential to avoid delays or refusal.
Family reunification remains a top priority in Canada’s immigration system. However, because Inland applicants are already residing together in Canada, processing times are generally longer.
Processing times may vary depending on:

If your primary goal is faster approval for permanent residence, applying Outland while living in Canada may be a strategic alternative.
Unlike parent and grandparent sponsorship, there is no minimum income requirement for sponsoring a spouse or common-law partner.
However, sponsors must sign a three-year financial undertaking, committing to support their partner’s basic needs and ensuring they do not rely on social assistance.
If sponsoring additional dependents (such as parents or grandparents), the Minimum Necessary Income requirements will apply.
The most significant advantage of Inland sponsorship is eligibility for an open work permit.
An open work permit allows the sponsored spouse to:
To qualify, the sponsored person must:
An open work permit can significantly reduce financial stress during the processing period.
Note: In both the Inland and Outland sponsorship streams, applicants residing in Canada with lawful immigration status are eligible to apply for an open work permit while their application is being processed.
If you reside in Quebec, additional requirements apply.
In addition to federal approval, Quebec sponsors must obtain a Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ) and sign a provincial financial undertaking for three years.
The sponsored person must:
Average processing times for Quebec sponsorship applications are currently approximately 35 months due to the dual federal-provincial review process.
