As a holder of an H1B visa residing in the USA and navigating the global landscape, the idea of exploring nearby countries, like Canada, frequently piques your curiosity.

In this article, we’ll delve into the possibilities of travelling to Canada on an H1B visa. Also explore other potential travel destinations, and provide valuable insights for H1B visa holders seeking new opportunities.

Can I Travel to Canada as an H1B holder?

While the H1B visa allows you to work in the United States, it doesn’t automatically grant you access to enter Canada. To visit Canada, you typically need a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on your nationality.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or Visitor Visa

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals who wish to fly to or transit through Canada. The eTA is not required if you are entering Canada by land or sea (e.g., by car or cruise). It’s important to note that entry requirements can change, so it’s advisable to check with the official website of the Government of Canada or consult the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information.

Citizens from some countries needed an eTA to visit Canada, check here: the official list of countries.

You should also be aware that having an eTA does not guarantee your entry into Canada. You must still meet other entry requirements, such as having a valid passport, being in good health, and demonstrating that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

If your country is not listed for those that require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit Canada, it means that citizens of your country are not required to obtain an eTA for short visits (by air) to Canada. But while an eTA might not be necessary, it doesn’t mean that a visitor’s visa is not required. Please check here: the list of countries that need a visitor visa.

Which Countries Can I Travel to with an H1B Visa?

The H1B visa is specific to the United States, but it does offer opportunities for travel abroad. Many H1B visa holders explore neighbouring countries during their stay in the US, like Canada or Mexico. However, each country has its entry requirements, so it’s essential to research and plan accordingly.

Indian nationals holding an H1B visa have the opportunity to explore various countries during their time in the United States including neighbouring nations and experience diverse cultures. Additionally, there is a list of countries that Indian passport holders can visit without the need for a separate visa. Can I Travel to the Bahamas on an H1B Visa?

The Bahamas is a popular travel destination, and the good news is that H1B valid visa holders can visit for short durations without obtaining a visa. However, it’s crucial to check the specific entry requirements and duration limitations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR) in Canada

Be cautious when travelling under this option, and consult a U.S. immigration lawyer before making travel plans!

The Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR) permits specific individuals to re-enter the United States from Canada or Mexico, to get an expired visa stamp.

Even with an expired visa, as long as they maintain all the requirements for their visa category. With AVR, the visa is deemed “extended” to the date of re-entry, eliminating the necessity to acquire a new visa for that specific entry.
