Canadian Visa Applications During the Holidays

Published on: December 3rd, 2024

During the holiday season, we all want to be around family and loved ones to celebrate this magical time of year. Before applying for your visa to Canada, or maintaining valid status over the holidays, it is important to plan ahead of time to help ensure a smoother application process.

If you want to enter Canada as a tourist, or if you are already in Canada with valid authorization (such as a work permit or study permit), you may still need a valid travel authorization to leave and re-enter Canada. It is important to know the type of document you may need to enter Canada.

Processing times with IRCC are another important factor to keep in mind as they can vary, and delays may occur due to government offices being closed over the holidays.

What Type of Visa Do I Need?

If you are outside Canada and want to visit during the holidays, you may need a visitor visa to enter Canada. If you are from a visa-exempt country, you may be able to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Processing times for an eTA are typically faster, and the application process is more straightforward.

For those outside Canada, more preparation will be required, as additional documents may be needed depending on the country you are applying from. The basic documents typically required include:

  1. A valid passport ID page with a validity period of no less than 6 months
  2. Itinerary – proof of flights (changeable and refundable)
  3. Proof of finances – the amount required will depend on the duration of your stay
  4. Ties to your home country – proof of employment, property ownership, etc.

These are the basic documents required, but depending on your personal circumstances, you may need to submit additional documentation. Since the decision for a visitor visa is at the discretion of the visa officer, it is important to ensure that your travel arrangements are refundable and/or changeable.

If you are already in Canada and wish to travel abroad to meet loved ones, you need to verify your visa and the requirements for re-entering the country. For example, if you have a visitor visa in your passport, check the expiry date before leaving the country. Having a valid authorization, such as a work permit or study permit, does not necessarily mean you will be able to re-enter Canada.

Tips for Those Applying for Canadian Visas During the Holidays

  1. Submit Your Application Early! Depending on your travel dates, you should submit your application well in advance to avoid any delays. Processing times can vary, and holiday closures or increased demand may cause further delays, especially if you want to spend the holidays with your loved ones in Canada.

  1. Check the Weather: Canada’s winters can be harsh, with a lot of snow and ice. Keep an eye on the weather, as it can impact your travel plans.
