The number of unfilled jobs in Canada continues to remain at an all-time high. In Q1 of 2019, 435,000 positions in Canada were vacant, with not much change for Q3. The CFIB report had estimated that there were roughly 433,000 private sector jobs that went unfilled between July 1st and September 30th, which was also 15,000 more than the previous year.

What Industries Need Workers?

The provinces with the largest private sector job vacancy rates were Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. Quebec continued to have the highest vacancy rate at 4.0%, followed by British Columbia at 3.8% and Ontario at 3.2%. The Maritime provinces ranged from 1.9 to 3.0%.

Over the past year, job vacancies in skilled positions have seen a significant increase, especially in the agriculture, information and hospitality sectors. With the recent boom in Canada’s tech industry, there continues to be a major demand for skilled tech workers to fill jobs in tech-leading Canadian cities, such as Vancouver
