Biometrics Now Required for Candidates Applying for Temporary and Permanent Resident Status Within Canada

The government of Canada has announced changes to the biometrics program to include those applying from within the country. As of December 3rd, 2019, foreign nationals applying for a work or study permit, visa-required visitor or permanent residence, and are currently residing in Canada, will also need to submit their fingerprints and photo.

Yesterday’s announcement concludes the final phase of Canada’s biometrics expansion program. Prior to December 3rd, only applicants from outside of Canada needed to submit their biometrics. Biometrics are now also a requirement for immigration candidates applying as a foreign worker, international student, visa-required visitor, or permanent resident within Canada.

While there are some exemptions, a submission of biometrics is also needed for candidates who are extending their work permit, study permit, or visitor stay in Canada. 


When do I need biometrics?

Those between the ages of 14 and 79 years old will need to submit biometrics before they begin the application process. The following types of applications will require biometrics:

Where to give your biometrics

58 designated Service Canada offices (SCOs) have been set up across the country to make the process easier for foreign nationals within the country. 

For those who are travelling outside of Canada have access to worldwide visa application centres (VACs) and application support centers (ASCs) in the United States. 

Once biometrics are submitted, they are valid for 10 years. For those who have previously submitted their biometrics, a check status tool is offered for applicants to find out if their biometrics are still eligible and when they expire.
