Biggest Monthly Job Gain Since April

After three consecutive months of little change in employment, August’s job growth exceeded all predictions. August saw  the seventh largest gain in jobs added since Statistics Canada started recording its data in 1976.  The month of August had the second biggest job growth this year following the 106,500 new positions added in April

The latest employment boost has now brought the net number of jobs over the past 12 months to 471,300, the highest total seen since 2003.

Five Provinces Saw Rise in Employment

Similar to past months, the majority of employment gains were in Ontario and Quebec, Ontario saw the biggest change with a rise in employment of 58,000 in August, with the majority of these jobs being in wholesale or retail trade. Quebec’s employment rose by 20,000 in the finance, real estate, rental and leasing industries.

Finance, Education and IT Lead as Top Industries

The tech sector continues to be one of the fastest growing industries in Canada. August saw a rise of 17,000 jobs in the tech industry, the majority being in British Columbia. Over the past twelve months, the net increase of employment in the professional, scientific and technical services was 109,000, or 7.4%, the fastest rate of growth among all major industrial sectors

There was a boost of 22,000 new jobs created in the finance, insurance, real estate, and rental and leasing industries, especially in Ontario and Quebec. Employment in educational services also saw a rise in August, bringing the total to 35,000.

Work and Live in Canada

With permanent resident status in Canada, you can live and work anywhere in the country! Although it is not necessary to have a job offer when applying for Express Entry, having one can increase your CRS score by 50-200 points. With the CRS cut-off currently at 463, having this boost in CRS score may better your chances at obtaining an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Many Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) have created immigration pathways for applicants with specific work experience and/or a job offer. If you have work experience in a field that is in-demand, you may be eligible for a provincial nomination for Canadian residence. With a nomination in hand, applicants will be in an excellent position to receive permanent resident status in Canada.

With job numbers on the rise, and Canada’s plan to welcome more than one million newcomers in the next three years, now is the best time for foreign nationals to take the first step towards Canadian permanent residence!
