Newcomers to Canada see Peak Employment Rate in 2018

The employment rate of newcomers to Canada is reported to have reached a new high in 2018! The increase is driven by Canada’s recent strong job-growth. With thousands of jobs added each month, and a low unemployment rate, more new immigrants are finding long-term, full-time work soon after they arrive!

Job creation has been thriving in Canada. Thousands of new jobs are being added each month, with as many as 100,000 new jobs in April 2019 alone. Statistics Canada’s monthly job report for May 2019 reported the lowest unemployment rate in over forty years. With Canadian businesses struggling to fill available jobs, the number of people searching for work has decreased to a record low of 5.4%.

In the past ten years, newcomers to Canada have seen great improvements in early integration into the workforce. In 2018, 71 percent of immigrants who had been in the country for five years or less were employed. This number is up from 67 percent a decade earlier, and is the highest yet recorded.

Demand for Workers and the Canadian Immigration System

The majority of Canada’s working population is entering or nearing retirement, so young, skilled workers are highly in demand in Canada. Attracting foreign talent to Canada’s workforce has motivated the Canadian government to create an efficient and accessible immigration process for international workers.

Live and Work Permanently in Canada through the Federal Express Entry System

Introduced in 2015, Canada’s Express Entry system processes the majority of immigration applications in just four months, so newcomers can quickly join the Canadian work force. Unlike the American Green Card, the end result of this process is permanent residency in Canada, meaning the ability to live and work anywhere in the country and full benefit of Canadian social and healthcare programs.

The Express Entry system rewards applicants with high levels of education, language skills and work experience. While the programs organized under Express Entry are targeted to skilled workers, a job offer is not necessary in order to apply. Fortunately, those who are receiving invitations to apply for permanent residence in Canada will arrive to find jobs in-demand and faster integration into the workforce!
