Parent and Grandparent Program On Hold

The federal government has announced that it will postpone this year’s Parent and Grandparent Program in order to find a better system to admit applicants.

The popular immigration program typically opens to new applicants in January, but with an overwhelming response over the last few years, the government has stated that it needs to take a step back and rethink its approach.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino has stated that the program will reopen sometime next year. News of the government’s plans for the future intake system should be revealed by April 2020 at the latest.

The program has been heavily criticized in recent years due to the lack of spots available after a flood of applications from hopeful citizens wishing to be reunited with their families in Canada. The program admits about 20,000 people annually, but current processing times are around two years.

Although this news may come as a disappointment to some, we are optimistic that the federal government will take this time to find a way to improve its intake process.
