Come to Canada as a Social Worker

Published on: April 8th, 2025

If you are a social worker interested in becoming a Canadian permanent resident, now is the time to apply. Canada’s ongoing shortage of social workers has led to a big demand for professionals in the field. Recent changes to the Express Entry system further increase opportunities for social workers to immigrate to Canada.

Canada’s Response to Social Worker Shortage

In late February 2025, the Government of Canada announced changes to the Express Entry system, aimed at addressing long-term labour shortages, particularly in healthcare and social services. As a result of these changes, social workers now have an advantage at applying for and securing Canadian permanent residency.

Eligible Job Titles

Amongst the recent Express Entry changes, The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) previously announced that the healthcare category was expanded to include social services across various fields, including support for marginalized groups, children, those with mental health or addiction issues, and more. The following are a few eligible job titles:

  • Addictions Worker
  • Women’s Shelter Supervisor
  • Child and Youth Worker
  • Rehabilitation Worker
  • Developmental Service Worker
  • Healthcare Social Worker
  • Mental Health Social Worker
  • Family Services Worker

It is important to note that the list above carries only a few examples of eligible job titles for social workers. For the full list of eligible professions, visit the Government of Canada website as there are more job titles you may fall under.

Eligible NOC Codes for Social Workers

If your current occupation falls under one of the following NOC codes, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Express Entry system as a social worker.
