March is Canada’s 15th Annual Fraud Prevention Month

Although we wish it weren’t the case, immigration fraud is a reality for many around the world. The good news is that the more you learn about immigration fraud, like how to recognize immigration red-flags, the better protected you’ll be. This March is Immigration Fraud Prevention month in Canada, a month dedicated to raising awareness on how to recognize, avoid and report immigration scams when you see them.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of individuals choose to live in Canada both temporarily and permanently. The immigration process can be intimidating, and the help of an expert can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and successful process for you and your family. Unfortunately there are those who try to take advantage of individuals going through this process, which can put your time, money and resources at risk.

The 15th Annual Fraud Prevention month in Canada will focus on distributing information to potential newcomers raising awareness about immigration fraud and how to spot it. Each week of the coming month, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will focus their social media channels on a distinct type of fraud that a new immigrant or Canadian citizen may encounter:

Week one: Don’t Fall for a Disappearing Act – how to identify “ghost” consultants
Week two: Preventing Fraud – know what to look for, and what the consequences could be
Week three: Spot a Scam – make sure you know what a social media or Web scam looks like
Week four: Know Your Rights – detecting fraud and deception in the private refugee sponsorship stream

Having a paid representative guide you through the Canadian immigration process can be invaluable, but only if they are licensed, registered and located in Canada. There are only two options for authorized paid immigration representatives in Canada; immigration lawyers and consultants. Anyone claiming to be recognized in either of these roles must be able to prove their registration with a Canadian Bar association, or with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC). Without this assurance, you cannot trust that someone claiming to a be an immigration representative is legitimate.

At Canadim, sharing information on how to recognize and avoid immigration fraud is important to us. Stay up to date with our blog in order to receive all the relevant information that will keep you informed before, during and after your Canadian immigration process.
