Toronto tech’s exceptional 2017

Toronto has long had a reputation as the hub of Canada. The city is the largest in the country and has a bustling economy across many different industries. Toronto is also the most popular destination for new immigrants to Canada. But! Toronto surpassed even its own reputation last year, according to a report released last week.

In 2017, the city of Toronto created more jobs than the tech-hubs of San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., combined! Toronto cranked out nearly 30,000 new tech positions in 2017, marking at 14% increase from the year before. With this increase in tech jobs, Toronto now ranks as 4th in the listing of top-ranked tech markets in North America.

Those looking for a career in an ever-growing economy should definitely add Toronto to the list. The city has grown this field exponentially in the last decade and it shows no signs of slowing down now.

Notably, Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, also scored highly in the report. Ottawa boasts more than 70,000 tech workers, making it another attractive option for those with the skills to succeed in tech environments.

Tech workers and Canadian immigration

Canada hosts a range of immigration programs to help talented tech workers immigrate!

Express Entry: This system for managing immigration applications is competitive, but tech workers are some of the most successful! If you are eligible for any of the Express Entry streams, your PR application could be processed in as little as four months!

Provincial Nominee Programs: Each of Canada’s provinces operates their own individual immigration programs, known as Provincial Nominee Programs, or PNPs. Many provinces target specific occupations, with a focus on tech-driven talent. Take a look at the PNPs offered by British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia, to find some of the tech-focused PNPs.

Global Talent Stream (GTS): The Global Talent Stream is a recent pilot program which helps Canadian employers hire extraordinary talent from outside the country. If you have unique skills and talents unmatched by other Canadians, you might qualify to work in Canada through the Global Talent Stream!
