Eligibility
You may be eligible for these extended measures if you are an Iranian national with valid temporary resident status in Canada, arrived in Canada on or before February 28, 2025, and you are applying for either a work permit, a work permit extension, or an initial study permit. These measures were created to help individuals who are unable to return home due to the ongoing situation.
Situations Where Extended Special Measures Apply (Deadline: February 28, 2026)
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), If you are currently a temporary resident worker, you may apply online to extend your status as a worker until February 28, 2026.
You may also apply to change your temporary resident status to an open work permit or to a study permit, or to apply for an additional open work permit or study permit, if your application is submitted online by the deadline.
These options are intended to give eligible applicants more time and flexibility during this time.
Situations Where Extended Special Measures Do Not Apply
In certain situations, the special measures no longer apply, and regular immigration rules must be followed. If your temporary resident status has expired, you must apply for a visitor record, and regular fees and processing times will apply. However, if your status expired less than 90 days ago, you may still be eligible to apply for restoration of status, but standard rules will apply.
If you are currently a student and want to extend your stay, or if you hold a temporary resident permit and wish to remain in Canada, the special measures have ended for these application types. In these cases, applications must be submitted under regular immigration processes, with standard fees and processing times.
Even when special measures do not apply, there may still be pathways available.
