Canada Launches New Pathway to Permanent Residence for Workers in Canada
Canada has quietly introduced a new immigration initiative that could allow up to 33,000 temporary foreign workers already living in Canada to obtain permanent residence.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), additional details about the program are expected to be released in April 2026.

Between 2026 and 2028, approximately 33,000 skilled temporary workers currently in Canada are expected to receive Canadian permanent residence through this new pathway.
Canada has increasingly relied on temporary foreign workers to support economic growth in recent years. This new initiative aims to provide a faster pathway to permanent residence for workers who are already contributing to the Canadian economy, especially those working in:

How to Submit an Express Entry Profile

- Language Tests

- CELPIP
- TCF Canada (for French speakers)
Language test results are valid for two years, and completing your exam early can help you determine whether you need to improve your score to increase your immigration prospects.
- Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) evaluates how your foreign degree, diploma, or certificate compares to Canadian educational standards.
If your education was completed outside Canada, you will need to:
- Request transcripts from your educational institution.
- Submit those transcripts to a designated ECA organization.
- Pay the required evaluation fee.
The assessment process typically takes seven weeks or longer, so beginning early can help avoid delays.
If you plan to claim additional points for your spouse’s education, your spouse will also need to obtain an ECA.
