Quebec Pauses Parents and Grandparents Program

Published on: July 25th, 2025

If you live in Quebec and want to sponsor your parents, grandparents, or other relatives to come to Canada, you will not be able to do so until after June 25, 2026. The Quebec government has paused all new sponsorship applications for these family members.

The reason for this pause is that Quebec has already reached the maximum number of sponsorship applications it will accept for these family members. This includes fathers, mothers, grandparents, and other relatives who would come to Quebec under the family reunification program. This pause is currently in effect until June 25, 2026.

Why is there a Pause?

Because the limit has been reached, no more applications will be accepted until after that date. If you still decide to send an application during this time, it will not be processed. Instead, as stated on Quebec’s government website, the immigration office will disregard your application, return it to you, and you will not be charged any fees.

Even though the federal government will reopen its Parents and Grandparents Program for the rest of Canada on July 28, 2025, that rule does not apply to Quebec. It is important to understand that Quebec has its own immigration process, and they have a special agreement with the federal government that lets them set their own immigration rules.

Who Can I Sponsor?

Quebec is still accepting applications to sponsor children under 18 years old, including those you plan to adopt. You may also be able to sponsor adult children who are dependent on their parents because of physical or mental conditions. These types of sponsorships are still open and being processed by the immigration office.

When Can I Sponsor my Parent or Grandparent?

If you want to sponsor your parents or grandparents to Quebec, the only thing you can do is wait for Quebec to reopen its intake after June 25, 2026. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates when the application window reopens.
