Canada hungry to fill tech jobs in 2018

Where are the jobs in Canada? And what fields are they in? 2017 represented the fastest employment growth for the country in a decade, with salaries increasing even while more jobs opened up. Tech and IT are skilled and high-earning industries in Canada. The tech sector is also one of the fastest growing sectors in Canada right now, demanding young skilled workers to fill nearly 30,000 jobs which opened up in 2017.

2017 a year of job growth

Between 2016 and 2017, Canada experienced the fastest growth rate of employment in the past ten years. This means there are more people working full-time jobs, and an increasing amount of these people are young, tech workers. The average weekly earnings for workers has shot up in most provinces since 2016, and the unemployment rate in the country is the lowest it has been since 2000. But, Canada is having difficulty filling the many job openings, turning to immigration to attract skilled workers to join its diverse industries.

Tech Industry fastest growing sector in Canada

The technology sector is experiencing its fastest growth rate since 2008. Cities such as Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal are quickly becoming recognized around the world as hubs for innovation in tech, with tech jobs offering an average weekly pay of $1,347 in 2017. Toronto is driving this growth and is also a top destination for newcomers to Canada. Canadian programs for immigration, such as those under Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs, are specifically looking to bring international skilled workers to the country to contribute to its bustling tech industry.

Jobs In Tech Receiving More ITA’s

The majority of employment growth in the tech industry was found in computer systems design and related services which grew by nearly 10% in 2017. In the year-end report for 2017’s Express Entry system, it was confirmed that the top three jobs for receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence were found in the tech industry. Particularly, the most successful occupations under Express Entry were Information Systems Analysts and Consultants, Software Engineers and Computer Programmers.

It’s an exciting time to join the growing Canadian economy. 2018 is set to see continuous demand for full-time skilled workers, as well as being a stepping-stone towards the Federal government’s promise of one million new immigrants by 2020.
